Q: Help Me With A Chevy Vega Question?
Did they <<(GM>> change from the aluminum block to a steel block any particular year?,,,and did GM sleeve the cylinders in 75 and 76? Or were they all aluminum ,,and no sleeves?

A: First 3-4 years were aluminum blocks with Nikasil cylinder coating, basically a hard chrome coating something like chrome plate on your bumper. Last two years they put iron sleeves in. Same engine other than that. Cosworth was a completely different engine and were few and far between.

Q: Can a drag car with an alcohol motor use nitrous oxide?
My friend has a Chevy Vega with an alcohol motor in it. He is running in the nine's without the NoS in it? But can he add NoS for more power?

A: yes he can. nitrous oxide is a gas that breaks down in to nitrogen and oxygen when it reaches a certain temp. with the extra o2 in the engine, you can ad more fuel into the mix. xtra fuel+ xtra o2= xtra power. but with it he would be in a diff drag class. and no longer be all motor.(if that's what hes in right now). on another note its not called nos. nos is just a brand.

Q: What, in your opinion, is the worst car ever made and why?
My personal favorite POS was the Chevy Vega -- rust bucket, ugly, slow, underpowered, steered like a dump truck and the engines seized with abandon. Yours?

A: You people don't know what you are talking about until you have driven a Trabant.

Q: What kinda car did the MVP get back in the day?
Back when players had to work in the produce aisle during the off-season to make ends meet, what did the Super Bowl MVP get? Like a used Chevy Vega or an AMC Gremlin?

A: a convertable pinto w'alarm

Q: Where can I find what engines and trans will fit in my car?
I have a 1975 Chevy Vega Superwagon. I was wondering where I could find out what engines would fit into the car.

A: people just kind of know. The Vega was a cousin to the Astra, Monza, Sunfire, Skyhawk and Starfire of same era. Engines and transmissions that fit them will fit in your Vega with minimal modifications. Engines includes: Chevrolet Small Block V8 Chevrolet 90° V6 Buick V6 Pontiac 2.5l 4 The T5 manual will fit, not sure about others. Personally, I'd go with an aluminum block Buick V6 from T/A: http://www.taperformance.com/proddetail.asp?prod=TA%5FV3800 because it is light, and will reduce the nose heaviness of your car, improving handling.

Q: What engine should I put into my car?
I have a 1975 Chevy Vega Superwagon. I asked what I could put into the car and I received a lot of feedback. Now I’m wondering what I can put in it that will take the least work. I’m not that car friendly but I love keeping my Vega around.

A: drop a chevy 350 in it, summit racing sells a mounting kit for that car so that engine will drop right in.

Q: `The worst car ever made? Yugo, Vega, Gremlin, Pacer etc.?
Years ago Esquire magazine put together a list of the ten worst cars. The Chevy Vega headed the list. There was car made in East Germany that people just left on the road after they drove to West Germany after the two Germanys were united. Evidently the nozzle on the pumps in West Germany didn't fit the car.

A: Trabant: plastic body, 2-cycle engine. The curse of communist East Germany. Cars made in China during the 1980's are probably some of the worst in the world, only other countries didn't have to suffer with them

Q: vega v8 conversion?
i have a 1971 chevy vega. i have a 350 sbc ready to drop in. my question is this,, what are my options for motor mounts? i have heard that the monza v8 mounts are a good way but i can't find any. i need the chassis mounts. also there is a transdapt kit but i can't find any info on if folks like them or not. i was thinking of just welding some on the frame or a motor plate. does anyone know where i can get monza mounts?? help lol

A: call summit racing.com and I'm sure they have a solution for you as that swap used to be very common back when they made the vega.

Q: where can i get a manual for a 1977 vega?
I need the electrical system for a chevy 1977 vaga, I cant find a manual any where.

A: Click on this link. You'll find it there. Scroll down. I saw it. http://search.ebay.com/1977-vega-manual_W0QQfromZR40 .

Q: what size camshaft can i use for my sb Chevy???
what size camshaft can i use?? i have a 1971 chevy vega. the car has been backhalfed w/ a 4:10 gear 29x10 tire. turbo 350 trans the car is tied together. ihave a 350 4 bolt main 10: 1 comp. camel back heads ported and polished and a torker intake. whats the biggest cam i can run??????? i dont have a torque converter yet or a carb. so i need advice on the cam and spring's???? happy thanksgiving!!!

A: 1st off, you will need to know how much lift your pistons will allow, with a similar setup, i ran a 292 duration, 510 lift without any problems. without fly cutting the pistons, i wouldn't exceed the 510 lift. After i put in 12.5 compression pistons, i used a 507 intake and 543 exhaust cam , and that was perfect with the 410 gear, but i ran a 4 speed... your automatic, will need a higher stall converter before you can go with a wilder cam than stock. i've got a nice Crane cam stlil in the box, that will work great for your application. I never used it, althought i had it installed for a while , in an engine i built, but never even cranked it. I changed the cam out before using themotor because of using the engine in a different application.Let me know if you're interested in it.

Q: how to you convert a automatic to a 4 speed?
i have a 1971 chevy vega that was a 4 speed car w/a 6 cyl. the system they used bacl then was a clutch cable. i would like to put a muncie or something like it in but they dont use the cable set up. so what can i use in place of it? i have the clutch pedal still but have to fab something up. any ideas???? my fellow gear heads please if your not going to put in good input find soomewhere else to amuse yourself. please if your not going to put in good input find soomewhere else to amuse yourself.

A: Trade your car with Trisha K! (2 questions back.)

Q: What was the cheesiest car that your parents ever owned?
Also what was your favorite car that they owned? Cheesy: For me it was a sky blue '74 Chevy Vega. Literally held together with baling wire and JB Weld. Favorite: Tow tone brown/tan '71 GMC pick up with a camper shell...we took that thing all over the country, and it never gave out!

A: A 1969 Volkswagen Bus. It was orange with brown trim(!) and has tie-dyed curtains in the windows. It also did not have working windshield wipers so they tied a string on one, had it come through one fly window, across the dash and out the other fly window where it was tied to the other windshield wiper. It was the passenger's job to pull the string back and forth when it rained. The horror!

Q: Do you know which cars are popular again for collectors today?
A guy paid $2300 for a 1976 AMC Pacer with an 8-track tape player! Out of the top 10 worst cars of all times (Per Business Week): Chevy Chevette (fell apart after 40.000 miles) Yugo (fell apart while you drove it) Ford Pinto (gas tank exploded if rear ended) My sister's first car. LIme-colored! Chevy Vega - My brother's first car! Can you name the other 6 worst cars?

A: To answer your original question, the 1957 Chevy continues to be among the top most popular collector car. Also on the top list, the 1956 T-Bird,

Q: Chevy VOLT: The real shocker will be the PRICE...?
The average American(which is GM's base) cannot afford a $1000/month economy car, which will run in the low 40's, and throw in financing, and a little trim, and you have the price of nearly double of a Prius/Honda/VW TDi...and $25,000 buys a LOT of gas. We've been down this road before, with Chevy's "car of the future"...think Corvair...Vega...Chevette...X-Car...Cobalt, ..and now we are suppose to get pumped up that they WOKE UP?! Now GM needs a 25 Billion dollar Tax-bailout(read Loan) to get jump-started. I don't drive a Toyota, but I think a $11,000 Yaris is a much better bet, today and tomorrow. Big-Oil ain't going anywhere short-term. Your thoughts, please? Don't put too much faith in auto-shows...what the customer get's is usually a watered down version, and a significantly higher price. Jury's out on that one, I'm afraid.

A: The irony of this is that Chevy already HAD an electric car - the EV1. they produced and leased them in California. But thanks to CARB interference, and a myriad of other puppet-master moves, the project was killer. People who had leased and EV-1 were required to return the car. Even the ones that people wanted to write a check for, and buy at the contracted residual, were taken back. All the EV-1s were taken to Arizona and destroyed. The whole thing was pretty revealing IMHO. Lest you think this is all tinfoil-hat conspiracy-theory talk, check out the EV1 story here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Motors_EV1 It was the subject of a very good documentary called "Who Killed the Electric Car" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Killed_the_Electric_Car%3F Rent it and watch it sometime before you put too much faith in GM - or any US manufacturer to do the right thing. For that matter, look at the Clean Diesel vehicles for sale in Europe. Ford already has a Focus-based clean-diesel car that gets 65 mpg, but they will not sell it in the US for "business reasons". http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/08_37/b4099060491065.htm?chan=autos_autos+--+lifestyle+subindex+page_top+stories Eurpoean manufacturers have been onboard with evolving diesel technology for deacdes. They have Diesel-powered BMW 5-series and Jaguars that have more torque, better economy, and the smooth, quiet ride of a gas-engine. And look at the uber-cool Opel Eco-Speedster: 155mph and 113 mpg. http://www.treehugger.com/files/2007/02/the-opel-eco-speedster.php

Q: I can't make my car payment. When will I get my stimulus?
Last year I traded my old Chevy Vega in on a new Escalade. Now I can't afford the payments and the bank wants to throw me out of my ride. When will Obama bail me out? Marysia, I already hocked the wheels. That's why it's up on blocks.

A: You see. You should have traded the Vega for something a little more in your budget then Obama wouldn't have to bail you out. The problem isn't the economy so much as its people not staying within their budgets. Until we learn to spend within our means we will be in an economic downfall. Nothing like spending money on an Escalade when you could have gotten a Honda cheaper and had better gas mileage.
