Q: How do you remove the inside panel from the front door of a 1996 Chevy Suburban?
I need to replace the handle on the driver's side so I can open it from the inside.
A: There are two screws that hold the panel on at the armrest/grab handle. The panel itself is held on with about 8-10 plastic "t" clips. There are tools for helping to pull the panels. You can try with a flat screwdriver. Also you will need a drill and pop rivit gun to install the new door handle. On the lower left of the door in the jamb there is a black panel that needs to be removed to allow access to door hardware to disconnection and re-connection.
Get some new clips from the dealer. You will break some during removal.
Q: How do I know if my fuel pump went out?
Ok. I have a 1996 Chevy Suburban LT with a 5.7L V8 Vortec Engine. Its fuel injected. It has been running smooth and starting with no problems since I bought it two months ago and it just started having problems starting 2 days ago but today it wont start at all. It cranks and is strong and it has new battery and new alternator and the starter is good but it just wont turn over even after pumping the gas pedal. It has about 1/4 tank of gas in it. I was told the fuel pump likes to go out on these trucks so I wanna know for sure before I put money into something that's not the problem. This has be frustrated as i have already put like 6K into my truck already. Pls help. Thanks
A: Yes, the fuel pump does like to go out on this model, but you're right; don't just change it without properly diagnosing the problem.
That engine is equipped with port injection, rather than the throttle body injection that the previous models came with. This pump delivers 45-55 lbs. of pressure and costs somewhere along the line of $300-$400.
The first thing you need to do is the simple test suggested by jonesj82.
However, just because you hear no sound, that does NECESSARILY mean it's the pump. As jones says, when you turn the key on, the pump should immediately make a whirring sound, but that sound will STOP after three seconds.
If the pump is working, then the next step would be to test the pressure at the throttle plate using the proper guages. This pressure has to be a MINIMUM of 45 lbs/sq.in. If not, replace the fuel filter & test again. If the pressure is STILL low, it's time to replace the pump.
If the pump is NOT working, first check all the fuses in the fuse box. Check the inertia switch & reset it if necessary. I believe it's located in the right kick panel on that model; but I'm not 100% sure, you may have to check the repair manual for this. If you STILL hear no noise at the tank, then you'll have to get out your test light & check for electricity at the junction where the hot wire to the pump leads into the tank. If you have juice & still no pump operation, replace the pump.
Sorry if I went into too much detail, but for the price of that pump, you'll want to be certain of the problem before you start blindly switching parts. Just make sure that if you do have to replace the pump that you get the correct pump. The low pressure pump that's used for the TBI absolutely will NOT work.
