Q: what needs to be done to diagnose a transmission?
my automatic tranny is shifting sparatically and its driving me insane. ill be going the same speed, and it will downshift out of nowhere, then upshift constantly. it dosent shift very easily, seems to get stuck in nuetral. also, when it is cold, it takes about 45 seconds to shift into drive, then when its warm, it takes about 5-10 seconds for it to shift from park to drive. I have a 1989 chevy suburban v2500. i put a turbo hydramatic 400 tranny in it, and this will have been my second rebuild. the modulater is in working conditions, and im pretty sure the vacuum is working, more testing is required. tranny fluid is clean, but i have yet to check the magnet in then tranny pan. the level of fluid was constantly monitered due to its rebuild. its only 2 years old, and ive already rebuilt it before. any diagnostic tips would work wonders for me. i would also like a link to a troubleshooting chart if anyone knows where one exists.

A: Check the governor assembly, it's on the side near the back of the unit. You will need to remove the 4 bolts and take the cover off to get to it. Make sure when the weights move the valve moves with them, you'll understand this when you have it in hand. Also make sure the gear on it is good and not "apple cored". If that gives you no results check the bore it goes into for wear. Also take the vaccume modulator out and make sure it's valve moves freely. If all that fails to produce a cause I would suspect the center support bolt has broken causing an internal pressure loss. There is a revised bolt to correct this problem.

A: there are many issues Valve body dirty,,,maybe warped clutch pack seals torque converter If you have the extra money take your truck to a trans shop and have it pressure tested to see if it is a clutch pack seal When you rebuilt the tranny did you check your bushings, maybe theres too much blow by,not holding enough pressure. An after market kit maybe a problem also, they are not designed to hold up. I rebuilt afew and so far have got 1 back but I have not torn it down yet to see what the problem is.. They are very touchy, everything has to be right
